Pulling up a bottom sample

Bottom Samples
FAIRWEATHER personnel acquire samples of sea floor sediments to determine the bottom characteristics. This information is used by anchoring vessels and for scientific studies. Bottom samples are obtained from multiple sites within a survey area.

A bottom sample

A sample is obtained by lowering a clamping scoop to the sea floor. When it reaches the bottom, its mouth snaps shut. When the scoop is raised, the contents are analyzed and recorded. A GPS position is obtained at the site so the information about the bottom type can be accurately charted.

Chart with bottom types Bottom characteristics are eventually noted on the nautical charts using descriptive abbreviations. To understand abbreviations used on charts, please see Chart No.1--Nautical Chart Symbols, Abbreviations and Terms.
